Making time to work out.

I've made it to the gym three days in a row & I feel awesome. I’m finding that consistent gym time is helping my mental health as well as physical health. You may not know that I signed up for the last round of 12wbt. While I didn't get to follow it as much as I wanted because the lack of sleep from Zelda (seriously, who’s getting up to workout at 5:30am when you’ve been awake at 11pm, 1am and 3am?) & working full time made it untenable. I had time away with work, Lulu started her after school activities and it all meant that it wasn’t the right time for me to commit to doing the 12wbt. Making time for workouts has been so hard.

Short Workouts

What changed my mindset in regards to fitting in a workout, was the 'quick' workouts that were part of the post-pregnancy 12wbt program. Keeping the workout to half hour is far more doable than an hour, which had previously been the set workout on the other 12wbt program that I did. You can get to the gym & back home again within that hour. You feel like you’ve had a workout & some time to yourself but it hasn’t taken up the entire evening.

So this is the first time in a long time that I have clocked three days in a row, but you have to start somewhere, hey?! I’m normally two or three times a week, but it hasn’t been three times in a row in a while and it feels good. Maybe it is all just starting to settle down and get into more of a routine post-newborn baby too. So anyway, my tip to you if you are struggling to fit in workouts is to cut the time down, oh and mix up the workout. Try something different and find the passion again.

Memories of 2016

2016 has been quite the year.

It started with a family holiday in Palm Springs (the best place & not just for adults) and we continued to take short trips out of town throughout the year, something we haven't really done in 2015.

Our beautiful Zelda arrived early and surprised us all. Lulu started pre-school. Our renovation finished. Nick built his first bike.

I collaborated with local business owners to host a Maternity Leave Lunch  and I organised a sold out charity movie night.

And as the year draws to a close I thought I'd share a few of the highlights from the past year on Girl in the Pjs:

2016 has come to a busy, busy end and I am looking forward to taking it a little easier in the new year. So many people are wanting this year to be over, but I for one, I am so thankful for all the things we have been able to do and experience this year. I achieved the goals I set for myself. I have a renewed focus on my day job and this blog.

Stay tuned in 2017 for more collaborative work and more of our everyday life in Central Australia.  Wishing you all a very happy new year, thank you so much for reading  xx

Melbourne and Apollo Bay Family Holiday

It has felt like we haven't been on holidays in a long time, which isn't true as we were in the States in January, we had an overnight get away to Glen Helen in May  and we went to Uluru for the August long weekend, but when you live in Alice Springs you just need to get to the coast every now and then. We took the opportunity at the end of October to go to Melbourne, see Elmo's stage show and then spend a few days on the coast.

Melbourne

Stay

We stayed in Tyrian Apartments on Johnston Street in Fitzroy. This was central to our family and a short tram ride to the city. On the way home we stayed at the Larwill Studio in Parkville. The Larwill is on the edge of the city, on way to the airport, but also close to trams, North Melbourne and has a huge playground next door. I loved both places and would certainly stay again.

Travel

Trams are so easy to use, but if you have a pram, make sure that you are able to lift it and the baby up steps as not all Trams have disabled/pram access. You can't buy Myki (payment) cards on the tram so Nick's sister picked up some for us before we arrived, you can purchase them from any 7 Eleven.

See NGV John Olsen Exhibition in the Ian Potter Centre, Federation Square - it's on until February 12 & includes a room where you can sketch your own inspired works - Lulu loved this.

Play

There is a huge playground at Art Play behind Federation Square. If you are there Wed-Sun there are art activities for children at Art Play . I had never heard of Art Play until we stumbled across the playground. I'll be checking their website and booking Lulu into their activities for our next visit to Melbourne.

Eat

We loved Po Boy Quarter on Smith Street in Fitzroy

Apollo Bay

Stay

In these beautiful townhouses in Marengo

Travel

We hired a car from the airport - the best way to get there

See

The Beach! Marengo is good for waves, Apollo Bay is flat for the little kids. As you can see, Zelda wasn't really into the beach time as much as we were.

Play

At the Apollo Bay town park on the foreshore. Hug the big koala at the Bakery

Eat

So many yummy places to eat. We recommend La Bimba - best oysters, Scorched Grill - yummy burgers, La Casalinga - best homemade pasta, the tasting room at the pub - the only place you can get food between 2pm & 6pm, but also great cheese platter.

Happy Holidaying
