Happy Holidays!!

 photo HAPPY-HOLIdays_zpsxduhgwf3.jpg
Girl in the Pjs is taking a little break. Actually, a long break, a month long holiday! Our little family is headed overseas to spend Christmas with Nick's family in Canada. With a little detour to Disneyland on the way and Palm Springs on the way back! I can't wait for cooler weather, a little snow, and open fires. There is much debate about this but I love the term happy holidays. Mostly because this time of year everyone is heading off somewhere on holidays.

Thank you so much for reading this little blog. Wishing you the most wonderful Christmas and all the best for the coming New Year!

Before we break for the year, I have a HUGE favour to ask. Would you please fill out in the first ever Girl in the Pjs Reader Survey? Your responses will help me in narrowing the focus of the blog content for 2016. While Girl in the Pjs is planning to be back mid January 2016, with the best of home decor, style, culture, motherhood & life in Alice Springs, it would be a shame if you preferred my posts on soufflé instead. I love blogging, I want to bring you content that you love too. So please fill out the short survey HERE.

Pending the results of the reader survey, of course, upcoming posts include our holiday travel tips, details of our finished renovation (is it too soon to talk about this?! Maybe possibly finished renovation is a more accurate headline), and a HUGE surprise! Catch you here in 2016 and thanks again for making Girl in the Pjs possible xx

New Years Eve Plans?

What's your plan for New Years Eve? Over the last few years I have really enjoyed just hanging out with a few friends, a nice dinner or BBQ and a few drinks. Nothing too crazy & probably what we'll end up doing this year. But it is nice to jazz up the party a little. The photos above lend a little inspiration for just that. A bit of sparkle, a bit of glitter. I also LOVE this table setting and the glitter at this party is out of control in an awesome way. Whatever your plans, I hope you have a happy and safe New Years x

Resolutions for 2014

The aftermath of our party poppers at our quiet New Years Eve BBQ
It's that time of year when we look back at our resolutions from last year, reflect on our achievements and look at what we are going to do differently this year. Looking back at my previous resolutionsI have to admit that the cleaning schedule fell off the rails fairly quickly. I'd like to pick that up again, but I think I prefer the feeling of having a whole clean house, rather than bits and pieces each day. Though every three days bathroom cleaning does wonders so maybe that might work for this year? I made time to exercise (not every day, but most days), made time for Nick to exercise, spent quality playtime with Lulu & we achieved our green goals of recycling the alcohol bottles & composting. All in all, it was a fairly achievable list.

This years list touches the three big ones, health, wealth & well being...

1. Consolidation - Since having a regular decent wage again, something we haven't had since we left Alice Springs for Melbourne in 2006, we have been a little indulgent. This has resulted in not a lot of savings. The first half of this year will be about saving. Consolidation. Luckily we do have a few weddings to attend which will get us a mini-break or two! But other than that, it's save, save, save.

2. Exercise - I'm going to exercise at least three times a week. I feel so much better about myself & life in general if I exercise, so I just have to do it. I think three times a week is much more achievable than every day, but it is a minimum amount. I can do more. I'll also keep you posted each week about how I'm going.

3. Movies - watch more movies. I'd like to think that since Lulu was born there hasn't been any good movies released, but I know that isn't true & we've just missed them. This year we'd like to watch more movies. This requires effort. It means starting the movie before 8:30 so we can finish it at our insanely early 'I'm a parent of a child who wakes up before 6:30am' bedtime. It means finding out what good movies are out there because as soon as they get on iTunes they get lost in a sea of crap. One extremely lazy way of finding out what's coming is that we have switched our Apple Tv screen saver to the movie posters for upcoming movies. I've already seen a bunch of posters of movies I'd like to see. Now to remember them when they're out on iTunes...

4. Date Night - Have a regular fortnightly date night/afternoon. Time for Nick & I to hang out without distractions of cooking/dishes/computers/bikes.

5. Blog - I love blogging, it really has become my hobby and this year I'd like to blog a little more & work on the skills I learnt over a year ago now at Blogshop, take better photos and connect more with people through blogging. I tend to read a lot of blogs, but not engage. This year I want to engage more.

6. Connect more with friends - This year I aim to catch up more with my friends, friends who live here & friends who don't. Reading what someone is up to on Facebook is not catching up, a phone call or a coffee/pub date is catching up. I need to do more of this. If I learnt anything from starting a mother's group, it's that things only happen if you organise them, so I'm going to organise more catch ups. I also want to organise more play dates for Lulu so form her friendships as she enters the play date age group.

7. Photo library - I'm going to stay on top of my photo library. By that I mean deleting all blurry shots as they come off the camera, deleting all shots where you've take ten of the same thing and keep just the one good one etc. I have spent the last week doing this for 5 years worth of photos. That's over 4000 deleted photos. I do not want to let this get out of hand again.

8. Complete our renovations - Yes this relies on other people (we're not doing the renos ourselves), but we have not been on top of following up other people. Life gets in the way. We get busy, tired, slack and we forget, but if we want the renos completed then we need to get on top of it.

Do you make resolutions? I never used to, last year was the first time and I liked how they gave a bit of purpose & direction to the year. Hears to a new year! A clean shiny slate to make our own.

I'll leave you with this cute flipagram I made of our highlights of 2013:

Resolutions for 2013

Photobucket

Each year my sister-in-law asks us what our New Years Resolutions are & I never really have any. I've tended to think that resolutions are something you say New Years Eve, but never remember when you wake the next day. However, after reading this post from Briana on how she did with her 2012 resolutions, I decided that it was time to make some. Here are my resolutions for 2013:

1. Cleaning Schedule - Maintain this cleaning schedule (via Emily at A Denver Home Companion) so cleaning the house does not become the half day ordeal that it sometimes has been. I've saved the schedule to the front page of my ipad so I can easily check what the job for that day is.

2. Exercise - Carve out some time each day to exercise. Exercise gives me time to think & time just for me. I like it & I need to do more of it. Getting up a little earlier or at least when the alarm goes off will be the key to this.

3. Time for Nick - Make sure Nick gets this time each day too. Am thinking more of our before/after work trade off will have to happen.

4. Quality Time - Ensure that I spend some quality time playing with Lulu each day. It is so rewarding teaching her new things & although this generally happens each day, it is so easy to get distracted by a text message or getting a cup of coffee & find the time sucked away.

5. Greening up - It's time for our little family to get a little greener. Recycling takes a little more thought in Alice Springs, what with no curbside recycling. But there are places to drop bottles, we just need to get a little more organised with our collecting of old bottles. Composting for the garden is also something we want to get into, including making use of our coffee grounds.

Writing the resolutions down has certainly helped solidify them in my mind. I'll be sure to let you know how I go. Have you made any new years resolutions? Please write them in the comments below or add a link to your blog if you have made any resolutions, I'd love to read them.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year!! We rang in the new year at a friend's home. A small bunch of people, kids running round, dancing and more than a few glasses of bubbly. It was delightful. The little miss snoozed in her pram for a few hours, then partied for a bit, ringing in the new year with us. She's a party animal that gal. We took the photo above about half an hour before midnight. I know I should have gotten her back to sleep as soon as she stirred but it sure was nice having her awake to celebrate with us.

How did you spend new years? To be honest I would have loved to be on the couch watching tv while the baby slept, but it was special spending new years with friends.

Baby Girl - In February we became parents. It's been scary & rewarding & wonderful. She lights up our lives. That giggle, my goodness. I think I would have been a little lost this year on our new journey with our baby girl without the help & support of fellow bloggers & my awesome blog readers. Each time I had a question you guys were there with answers. Thanks so much.
Family Adventures - We loved travelling with her this year. Seeing eyes light up at new sights & the joy she brings to others, it's wonderful.
Back into Exercise - I have throughly enjoyed getting back into exercise this year. Exercise makes me feel good about myself. I love it.
New House - Not only did we become parents, but we also bought a house together. A grown-up house with a yard and a garden. Gardening has become a new weekend hobby.
Blogshop - After nine months of baby focus, I was able to have a break for a weekend & attend blogshop. I learnt so much. I missed my husband and baby, they would have loved the adventure.
Alice Springs - I have thoroughly enjoyed being back in Alice Springs this year. We've made a home here, made new friends, firmed up old friendships. I've found part-time Anthro work, Nick's carved a new work path. The beauty of this place gets me every day. We are so lucky to live here. Alice has been good to us.

On a slightly different note, but it deserves a mention as 2012 has not been all sunshine & rainbows. Cancer has hit a few friends and family in 2012 and I want to say here's to 2013 being the year of recovery.
